Ellu Kozhukattai which is also known as Sesame Jaggery Modak is a traditional South Indian recipe which is prepared on the occasion of Vinayaka Chathurthi. As Vinayaka Chathurthi is nearing I prepared this Ellu Kozhukattai for this auspicious occasion.
You can make rice flour in 2-3 methods. I made the rice flour dough with store-bought idiyappam flour. Instead, you can soak rice, grind to smooth paste and heat it in a kadai till it becomes a thick ball. The one given here is the easy method. For preparing rice dough either you can use a cup of boiling water or a cup of hot milk or half of the boiling water and half of the hot milk. This sesame jaggery filled modak is my hubby’s favorite. This can be had as an evening snack too.
I have used modak mold to make this kozhukattai, instead, you can make it without the mold also. I have already posted few more Vinayaka Chathurthy recipes like Kara Pidi Kozhukattai, Vella Pidi Kozhukattai, Ammini Kozhukattai, Paal Kozhukattai. Now let us see how to prepare this recipe.

- 1/4 cup Jaggery/Vellam grated
- 1/2 tsp Cardamom/Elaichi Powder

- In a wide bowl add rice flour, salt, sesame oil and mix well. Then add boiling water little by little and bring the dough to chapati dough consistency. As using boiling water mix dough with the help of a spatula. Close the dough with a damp cloth, so that the dough doesn't dry.
- Apply oil to modak mold. Take a small lemon size dough and press it inside the mold, that it covers the entire mold and a hole is in the center. Now fill this hole with a tbsp of prepared sesame jaggery filling. Now take another small pinch of dough and close the filling thoroughly, so that the filling doesn't spill out while steaming.
- Make modak with the remaining dough too. Now place the modak in the idli pan or any steamer. Do not overcrowd the modak and steam it for 8-10 mins only. Once done let it cool for a while. sesame Jaggery modak is ready to serve to God.
