Beans Paruppu Usili, this is the first time in my entire life, I am making this usili. A few weeks back one of my friend Deepa Sundar gave me to taste this delight. It was awesome. So I got the recipe and tried it today, ah… and to my surprise, it came out well in the first attempt. So here I am going to share this recipe with you all.
This is very popular South Indian Tamil Brahmin Recipe. The method of making recipe is very easy. This is a perfect South Indian delicacy and goes well with Mor Kuzhambu, Puli Kuzhambu, and Vatha Kuzhambu.
Step that is involved in usili are :
- Soak and grind the toor and chana dal together coarsely without adding water as we do it for masala vada.
- Then make small balls with ground dal mix and place it in a steamer to cook.
- Then crumble it by hand or using a mixer and this can be used along with any veggies mentioned below.
There are so many veggies which can be made using this recipe. Some of them are cluster beans, banana flower, french beans, broad beans, beetroot, and cabbage. Today let’s see how to make usili using French beans.
- 250 gms French Beans
- 1/4 cup Toor dal
- 1 tsp Chana dal/kadalai paruppu
- 3 Dry Red Chilli
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- salt to taste
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp Mustard,chana dal,urad dal
- 1 strand Curry leaves
- Soak toor dal and chana dal for at least half an hour. Meanwhile finely chop the beans and set aside. Once dal is soaked, wash thoroughly and remove water completely. First dry grind chilli using a mixer, then add dal, salt, turmeric, and grind coarsely without using any water.
- Now make gooseberry size small balls with grounded dal. Grease a steamer plate with oil and place both dal balls and beans. Now steam them together for 8-10 minutes to get it cooked.
- Once done remove the plates from steamer and set aside to cool. Now crumble the balls by hand or using a mixer. Now heat a Kadai, add oil and let it heat. Then add mustard and curry leaves. Let it crackle.
- Now add beans, a little salt and saute for 2-3 minutes. Add crumbled dal to it and sprinkle a little water and mix it thoroughly for 2-3 more minutes. Now Beans Usili is ready to serve.
- First, grind the dry chilli using pulse mode in a mixer.
- Then along with ground chilli, grind the soaked toor and chana dal coarsely without adding water.
- Steam both dal balls and veggie at the same time.
- Crumble steamed dal using a mixer as it gives even texture.
- The Same method can be used to prepare cluster beans, banana flower, french beans, broad beans, beetroot, and cabbage.
Delicious Beans Paruppu Usili is ready to relish.
