Ganesh Chaturthi also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi is the Hindu festival celebrated in honor of the elephant-headed god, Ganesha. This is a very auspicious day celebrated to pray to the god so that every new activity that is started is successfully completed without any obstacles. (updated a new photo and video)
The primary dish made during this festival is modak, kozhukattai/kolukattai in Tamil. Two versions – sweet and spicy modaks are made. This dish is made of rice either as pidi kozhukattai or purna kozhukattai. Today lets make kara pidi kozhukattai. Rice flour is generally available in stores, but for this preparation, it is advisable to grind the fresh batter.

- 1 cup Idly rice
- Water to grind
- salt to taste
- 1 tbsp Coriander leaves
- 2 tbsp Coconut chopped in to bits
- 2 Green chillies
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1/2 tsp Mustard /kadugu
- 1/2 tsp Bengal gram/kadalai paruppu
- 1/2 tsp Jeera/seeragam
- 1 strand Curry leaves
- Soak rice at least for an hour. Wash it thoroughly and using mixer or grinder, grind it to smooth paste. Batter should be in thick consistency. So use little water to grind.
- Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard, bengal gram and jeera, let it splutter. Now add finely chopped onion, curry leaves, coriander leaves and green chillies. Add little salt to onion. Saute for 2-3 minutes.
- Once onion is golden brown, add the ground smooth batter, coconut bits and salt , mix thoroughly. Keep stirring continuously as it binds fast. Once it forms a mass switch of the flame and let it cool.
- While it is still warm, grease your hands with oil and take little batter and make lemon size balls and make oval shape by pressing with your fingers to get impression. Repeat same for entire batter.
- Arrange it in to a steamer plate and cook for 8-10 minutes in medium flame.
- Avoid using rice flour from store as it turns hard.
- While grinding add less water to get proper consistency to shape modak.
- Don't let rice mixture to dry. While making shapes close the remaining mixture with wet cloth.
- In this method you don't get any lumps in the mixture while making modak.
This dish can also be prepared as a healthy evening snack for kids, family, and friends.
