One more Vinayaka Chathurthi recipe Sweet modak/Vella pidi kozhukattai which is made of ground rice, jaggery, and coconut.
Sweet kozhukattai is one of my favorite. I make it a traditional way by grinding the rice. It’s a foolproof recipe which cannot go wrong. Kozhukattai made of store-bought rice flour will become hard. Instead, if you grind rice and make Kozukattai it would be soft for a long time. Mom makes different types of modaks by adding grated coconut / chopped coconut. Both tastes are good. This can be made as an evening snack too.

- 1 Cup Idly rice
- 1 Cup Jaggery
- 2 tbsp Coconut chopped into bits
- 1/2 tsp Elaichi Powder
- 1/4 Cup Water
- Soak rice for an hour and using mixer or grinder, grind it to smooth paste as idly batter consistency.
- Melt jaggery on low flame in quarter cup of water and if there is any impurities, filter the jaggery water. Heat the water again, add coconut bits and elaichi powder and mix well.
- Now add ground batter to the hot jaggery mixture, after adding the batter becomes watery. Don't worry, keep stirring continuously as it binds fast. Once it forms a thick mass switch of the flame and let it cool.
- While it is still warm, grease your hands with oil and take little batter and make lemon size balls and make oval shape by pressing with your fingers to get impression. Repeat same for entire batter. Arrange it in to a steamer plate and cook for 8-10 minutes in medium flame.
- Avoid using rice flour from store as it turns hard.
- Make sure jaggery dissolves completely. It is not needed to get string consistency.
- Don't let rice mixture to dry. While making shapes close the remaining mixture with wet cloth.
- By this method you will never get any lumps in the mixture while making modak.
- Add a pinch of salt while mixing the batter, it enhances the sweet taste.
Let kozhukattai cool down and Enjoy. Delicious Kozhukattais/Modaks are ready to serve.
