Vendaya Keerai Masiyal is nothing but mashed Fenugreek leaves with dal. Fenugreek is rich sources of protein, dietary fiber, B vitamins, iron and several other dietary minerals. It is a good practice to have greens in regular diet. This masiyal can be made with any type of keerai (greens) along with Toor Dal or Moong Dal.
We are going to prepare this recipe using a pressure cooker. Always wash the keerai first and then cut. If you cut first and then if you wash the keerai all the nutrients will be lost. Using the same method you can add any greens like paruppu keerai, ara keerai, siru keerai or palak instead of vendaya keerai. This keerai masiyal tastes delicious that it goes well with rasam or curd rice and even you can mix it with hot steamed rice. Now let us see how to prepare this healthy keerai masiyal.

- 1 bunch Vendaya Keerai / Fenugreek leaves
- 1/2 cup Toor dal/Thuvaram paruppu
- 1 Onion
- 1/2 Tomato
- 2-3 Garlic pods
- 4 Green chillies
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tbsp Vadagam
- 3 tsp oil
- salt to taste
- Keep all the ingredients ready. Wash vendaya keerai thoroughly, remove thick stem and finely chop it including tender stems. Also finely chop onion and tomato.
- In a pressure cooker add toor dal, turmeric powder, a tsp of oil, chopped onion, tomato, green chilies, garlic pods and add required water till dal is immersed. Now, add vendaya keerai. Do not mix the ingredients.
- Close the lid and pressure cook for 3 whistles. Let the pressure to completely release. Then open the lid, mash or mix the ingredients thoroughly using a ladle or paruppu mathu. Add little hot water and mix to bring it to the proper consistency.
- In a thalikkum ladle add oil and let it heat. Then add thalikkum vadagam and let it crackle. Add this temper to mashed keerai and mix it thoroughly. Vendaya keerai masiyal is ready.
- You can add any greens like paruppu keerai, ara keerai, siru keerai instead of vendaya keerai.
- This can be mixed and had with hot steamed rice.
- Do not mash it in the mixer. Use a ladle or paruppu mathu to mash the keerai.
- If you don't have thalikkum vadagam, temper with mustard seed.
