Muttaikose Poriyal / Cabbage stir fry is a simple and easy South Indian dish. This stir-fry is almost prepared each week as it cooks fast and best suitable for tiffin box. Even bachelors can prepare this hassle-free. Cabbage has so many health benefits and has antioxidant property.
This cabbage stir-fry can be prepared very easily using few available ingredients. I have already posted Cabbage Kootu recipe using chana dal. This simple recipe can be had as an accompaniment with Sambar or Rasam rice. Thoroughly wash the cabbage and cut either lengthwise or finely chop. While sauteeing sprinkle little water only as cabbage cooks very fast. I have used normal onion, you can even add shallots. If you add more water it becomes soggy. Crunchy stir-fry tastes much better. I am using green chili in this method. You can even make use of red chili powder. Soon will be posting that method too. Let us now see how to prepare this Muttaikose Poriyal.
- 250 gms Cabbage/Muttaikose
- 1 Onion
- 2 Green chilies
- 1 strand Curry leaves
- 1 tbsp Coconut grated
- 1 tsp Mustard,chana dal,urad dal
- 2 tbsp oil
- salt to taste
- Keep all the ingredients ready. Finely chop onion. Wash and cut cabbage lengthwise. Heat a Kadai, add oil. Once oil gets heated add mustard seeds and let it crackle. Then add onion, curry leaves, green chilies and saute till onion turns translucent.
- Now add cabbage and saute for 2-3 minutes. Then sprinkle little water, salt to taste, close the lid and cook for 10 minutes till cabbage is cooked well and all the water is evaporated.
- Then add grated coconut and saute for another minute. Cabbage stir fry is ready.
- Don't add too much water, just sprinkle little only.
- Cut cabbage lengthwise or can be finely chopped.
- You can even use shallots instead of onion.
- I like white color cabbage poriyal, you can even add turmeric once the onion is sauteed.Â
