Flax Seed Idli Podi is a simple and healthy podi made in South Indian Style. This podi serves as a great side dish for Idli, Dosa, and rice. Flaxseed is also known as “azhi vidai” (ஆளி விதை) in Tamil, “Alsi ke beej” (अलसी के बीज) in Hindi.
Flaxseed has innumerable health benefits. Let us see few of them here. Adding flaxseed to your diet is an excellent way to jump-start your colon cleanse. Flaxseed also lowers bad cholesterol. Studies have shown that patients who supplement with flaxseeds experience an improved lipid profile and plasma glucose levels. High blood sugar leads to diabetes. There has been quite a lot of debate on how should one consume flaxseeds. It is true that flaxseeds, when not chewed properly, can go undigested, flushed out your system. Ground or milled flaxseeds, in that case, make a better choice. There are numerous ways to include flaxseed in our daily diet, such as rotis, parathas, poori, smoothies, yogurt, salads, soups. Today we are going to see how to prepare Idli podi using flaxseeds. While serving, serve with sesame oil or ghee.

- 1/2 Cup Flax Seed
- 1/4 Cup Bengal gram/kadalai paruppu
- 1/4 Cup Urad Dal/Uluttam Paruppu
- 10 Dry Red Chili
- 1/4 Cup Curry leaves tightly packed
- 1/2 tsp Asafoetida/hing
- salt to taste
- Dry roast flax seeds on medium-low flame till it starts to splutter. Once done transfer to a plate. In the same pan dry roast chana dal and urad dal until it turns golden brown and then transfer it to the plate.
- I washed fresh curry leaves and spread it on a towel to remove moisture in it. Dry roast curry leaves for a minute till moisture is gone. Do not let the color of the curry leaves change. Again roast dry red chili on low flame till a nice aroma comes and chili starts to puff. once done transfer this to the plate. Switch off the flame and roast asafoetida too and transfer to the plate.
- Let all the ingredients cool and come to room temperature. Once cooled transfer the roasted ingredients along with required salt to mixer and grind it coarsely. Flax Seed Idli Podi is ready.
- Always roast the ingredients in the low flame to get the best taste.
- Do not leave it unattended, as it may be burnt easily.
- You may also add roasted sesame seeds to enhance the taste.
- Some even add jaggery powder, garlic, and tamarind too.
- Use whipper mode to grind the ingredients to get the coarse powder.
- Specified Chili was enough for me. If you want spicier add more chili.
