Cabbage Fry is a simple South Indian accompaniment which goes well with sambar or rasam. This is one of the easy recipes which can be prepared by a novice too. There are so many methods of making cabbage fry. Some of them are Cabbage Kootu, Cabbage Stir-fry using green chili which I have posted earlier.
While sauteeing add only a little water, about a tbsp or two only. If you add more water the cabbage turns to be soggy. Crunchy cabbage tastes better. According to your preference, you can either add green chilies or chili powder. Both tastes different and as I said above I have already posted green chili version. You can check in the above link. If you have shredded cabbage handy you can prepare this recipe in no time. I enjoyed this accompaniment with Onion Sambar and Toor Dal Rasam. Now let us see how to prepare this recipe.
- 400 gms Cabbage/Muttaikose
- 1 Onion
- 1 strand Curry leaves
- 1 tsp Chili powder
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- salt to taste
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1/2 tsp Mustard,chana dal,urad dal
- Finely chop onion. Shred cabbage lengthwise. Heat a pan and add oil. Once oil gets heated add mustard seeds. Let it crackle. Then add onion, curry leaves and a little salt. Saute till the onion turns translucent. Now add cabbage and saute until it is half cooked.
- Then add turmeric powder, chili powder, salt to taste and sprinkle little water. Mix all thoroughly. Close the lid and cook for 10 mins. Mix between twice. Now all water is absorbed and the cabbage is ready. Serve with sambar or rasam.
- Other variations are you can add green chilies in the place of chili powder.
- If using green chilies skip turmeric powder and add grated coconut at last.
- For this method, grated coconut is not necessary.
- You can even add half of the chili powder and half of the sambar powder too while sauteeing.
Delicious cabbage fry is ready to relish along sambar or rasam rice.
