Chow Chow Kootu/Chayote Kootu is a no onion no garlic kootu which is prepared with the simple ingredients available in the pantry. This is a typical South Indian style kootu which is made with moong dal and ground coconut.
This can be had along with any tangy gravies like puzhi kulambu, poondu kulambu. This can also be mixed with hot steamed rice and relished. You can even add sambar powder to enhance the flavor. I have used moong dal, you can even replace it with chana dal or toor dal. Moong dal cooks very easily so no need to soak it, but roast it till a nice aroma comes. If you are using chana dal or toor dal, soak it for at least 3 hours before pressure cooking it. Again you can increase or decrease the flavors according to your needs. - 2 tbsp Coconut grated
- 1 Dry Red Chili
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- 1 Chow chow/Chayote medium size
- 1/4 cup Moong dal/Paasi paruppu
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- salt to taste
- 1 tbsp Coriander/Kothamalli Leaves finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds /kadugu
- 1 Dry Red Chili
- 1/4 tsp Asafoetida/hing
- 1 strand Curry Leaves/Karuveppilai
- 1 tsp oil
- In a mixer add coconut grated, dry red chili, cumin seeds and coarsely grind it without adding water.
- Peel, deseed and chop the chayote to a one-inch piece. In a pressure cooker add moong dal and roast it for a while till a nice aroma comes. Then add chopped chayote, turmeric powder, salt and add little water till it immerses.
- Pressure cook for 3 whistles. Let the pressure release. Then open the lid. Now add ground coconut powder and mix thoroughly. Cook for another 4-5 mins.
- Set aside once it is cooked well. Heat another pan, add the ingredients under "To temper" one by one.
- Now add the temper to the cooked chayote. Mix it thoroughly and garnish with coriander leaves. Chayote kootu is ready.
- If you want spicier add extra dry red chili while grinding.
- Instead of adding extra chili you can even add a tbsp of sambar powder while adding the coconut for cooking. It gives a nice flavor to the kootu.
- You can even add chana dal or toor dal instead of moong dal. Each tastes differently.
