Maa Vilakku is nothing but an edible rice flour lamp made on special occasions such as Aadi festival, Aadi Friday, Kaarthigai Deepam, Tamil month of Thai and purattasi and much more. This is a unique sweet of South India which is prepared mainly to offer for God.
As Aadi month is nearing I thought this is the perfect time to share this recipe with you all. This edible lamp is made up of homemade rice flour and jaggery mixture, flavored with cardamom powder and dry ginger powder. This particular sweet is consumed only after an offering is made to God.
You need to soak rice at least for 1 hr or more. Use only raw rice. Do not let the rice flour dry for a much longer time, maximum of 10 to 20 mins is enough. 2 tsp of ghee was enough for me to bind the dough. If required add more. The prepared dough should be stiff, so make sure you add enough ghee only or else the dough may become runny consistency and may not hold the shape. Either grate jaggery or run it in a mixture to avoid lumps. Do not discard the sieved coarse rice flour, instead, you can use it while making idli or dosa batter. Now let us see how to prepare this recipe.

- 1 cup Raw Rice Pacharisi
- 1 cup Jaggery/Vellam
- 1 tsp Cardamom/Elaichi Powder
- 1 tsp Dry ginger powder/Sukku
- 2 tsp Ghee
- Soak a cup of raw rice in enough water for 1 hr or more. After 1 hr wash and rinse it thoroughly. Drain it in a strainer and keep it in the strainer for 15 mins until all the water is completely drained.
- Now spread the drained rice on a clean cotton cloth for 15-20 mins. Then grind the rice in a mixer to a smooth powder. Then sieve it using a siever.
- Now to this sieved rice flour add the finely grated jaggery, cardamom powder, and dry ginger powder and mix well thoroughly. You can even pulse it in the mixer for a min. Then add 2 tsp of hot ghee to this mixture and knead it thoroughly. Divide the dough into two portions.
- Hot ghee helps to melt the jaggery while kneading and you can make it into a dough shape. Make two balls out of the rice flour mixture. Then pat it gently on all sides to make a square shape as shown in the video.
- Then make a dent on top using a sharp object. Place turmeric and kumkum on four corners of the dough. Add ghee and place a wick and lit the lamp. The edible lamp is ready to serve God.
