Brinjal Podi/ Katharikkai Podi is a stir fry with freshly homemade masala. This curry is usually made with green brinjal. As I could not find green brinjal here, made with purple brinjal.
The spice powder made varies from home to home. Some even use sambar powder for this curry. Podi means coarsely crushed, that’s why the spices are dry roasted and crushed coarsely and added to this curry. You can feel the coarsely crushed masala in each bite. The coarse texture of this curry and the taste takes this dish to the next level. Use small size brinjal to make this recipe.
This can be had as an accompaniment with any rice like sambar, rasam or curd and even can be had with chapatti. This irresistible curry is made with a generous amount of sesame oil. There is no onion, no tomato nor ginger garlic in this recipe. This scrumptious curry is made with simple ingredients in the pantry. Now let us see how to prepare this recipe.

- Wash and cut the tail of the brinjal. Cut brinjal lengthwise into 4 pieces as shown in the video. Place the brinjal in the water so that it will not change the color.
- Now heat a pan. Add chana dal, coriander seeds, urad dal, sesame seeds, and dry red chili. Dry roast it until all turn golden brown color.
- Once done transfer it to a plate and let it cool completely.
- Once cooled transfer the masala to a mixer jar and grind it into a coarse powder.
- Now heat another pan and add sesame oil. Once the oil gets heated add mustard seeds, hing, curry leaves and let it crackle.
- Then add brinjal, and saute it in the oil for a min until the color of the brinjal is slightly changed.
- Then add turmeric powder and required salt and mix well. Close the lid and cook brinjal in the oil for 5 mins or until brinjal is cooked well. No need to add water.
- Then open the lid and add the prepared masala. Mix all well and cook for another 3 mins. The masala will nicely coat on the brinjal as shown in the video. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
- You can use any brinjal but use small or medium size brinjal.
