Cluster Beans Fry/Kothavarangai poriyal is an easy and delicious South Indian accompaniment that goes well with rice. This fry can be prepared within 20 mins. Cluster beans fry is a healthy side dish.
There are so many health benefits of having cluster beans. Cluster beans are known as Gavar in Hindi. Cluster beans are good for diabetics as they have the highest fiber content among all vegetables, which in turn, prevents a rapid rise in blood sugar levels after a meal. This contains calcium and minerals which help build the bones. It lowers the blood level of bad cholesterol. Iron and calcium present in cluster beans are good for pregnant women. It also improves blood circulation and also acts as a digestive agent.
You can make so many varieties of dishes using these cluster beans. You can make it as a simple fry or you can combine it with dal and make it as usili or kootu. Always add any one of the green vegetables to your daily meals. Now let us see how to prepare this recipe.

- 200 gms Cluster Beans/Kothavarangai
- 1 Onion finely chopped
- 1 strand Curry Leaves/Karuveppilai
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Chili powder
- 2 tbsp Peanuts/Ver Kadalai
- 1 tbsp Coconut grated
- salt to taste
- 2 tbsp Peanut Oil
- 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds /kadugu
- Heat a pan and dry roast peanuts for 2 mins or until it is roasted well. Transfer it to a plate and let it cool completely. Rub and remove the skin of the peanuts.
- Transfer peanuts to a mixer jar, grind it to a coarse powder, and set it aside.
- Wash and drain the cluster beans thoroughly. Cut the head and tail. Again cut the cluster beans into a one-inch length and set aside.
- Heat a pan and add oil. Once the oil gets heated, add mustard seeds and let them crackle.
- Now add onion and curry leaves. Saute until the onion turns translucent. Add a little salt for onion, turmeric powder, and saute for a min.
- Then add cluster beans, required salt, chili powder, and saute it for 2 mins in the oil. Then add half a cup of water and mix well. Close the lid and cook for 10 mins or until all the water is absorbed. Mix in between twice.
- Once it cooked well, add groundnut powder, grated coconut, and mix well. Cluster beans fry is ready. Serve hot with rice.
- Without peanuts also you can make the fry. But adding peanuts gives a nice flavor to the fry.
- Use either groundnut oil or sesame oil.
- Roast the groundnut on a low flame only.
- You can make the same fry by using the french beans too.
