Beachside or roadside shop sundal/Pattani gravy is prepared using dried yellow peas. Cooking dried peas in an electric pressure cooker is like a breeze. You can either soak the peas in advance or cook them as such in the electric pressure cooker.
Here, I am showing the soaked yellow pea version. I personally feel soaking peas makes it cook evenly. When you have a sophisticated pressure cooker, why would you want to waste time and electric consumption? Soaking yellow peas takes only 15 mins timer to pressure cook whereas unsoaked yellow peas take 40 mins to pressure cook. It is up to you to choose, which method works better for you.
You can use different modes in the electric pressure cooker. NPR stands for Natural Pressure Release.
PRESSURE COOK MODE: soaked – 20 mins/ unsoaked – 45 mins NPR
BEANS MODE: soaked – 20 mins/ unsoaked – 45 mins NPR
SLOW COOK MODE: soaked overnight and 8 hrs slow cook. while slow cooking, use a regular glass lid.

Now let us see how to prepare this recipe.
- 1 Onion medium size
- 2 Tomatoes medium size
- 1 Green chili
- 3 Garlic pods
- 1 inch Ginger
- 1 cup Yellow Peas Soaked overnight
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Chili powder
- 2 tsp Coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp Garam Masala Powder
- salt to taste
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 Onion finely chopped for garnish
- 2 tbsp Carrot grated
- 1/4 cup Plain Sev
- 2 tbsp Coriander Leaves/Kothamalli finely chopped
- Soak a cup of yellow peas in enough water for about 8 hrs or overnight.
- Add all the ingredients under "To grind" in a mixer jar. Grind it to a smooth paste without adding any water and set it aside.
- Turn the SAUTE mode on LOW. When the display shows HOT, add oil.
- In to the oil, add the ground paste and saute for a min. Now add turmeric powder, chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder, a little salt for onion tomato paste, and saute for another min.
- Add 1/4 cup of water, close the lid and cook until the oil comes out. Now add soaked yellow peas, a cup of water, adjust salt, and mix all thoroughly.
- Cancel the SAUTE mode. Close the lid. Turn the VENT to SEALING POSITION. Select the PRESSURE COOK mode on HIGH for 20 mins. Natural Pressure Release.
- Once done, the red valve drops. Turn VENT to VENTING POSITION. Open the lid.
- Mix all thoroughly. If required, reduce the consistency by using the SAUTE mode.
- Serve hot in a bowl. Garnish with onion, coriander leaves, grated carrot, and sev. Delicious beach sundal is ready.
- I like to soak beans, as it cooks evenly. If you don't want to soak, pressure cook unsoaked peas for 40 mins and natural pressure release.
- Adjust green chili and chili powder according to your taste.
- Adding sev is optional. It gives a nice crunch to the sundal gravy.
- You can even top it with masala vada/potato patty/samosa/or any other chat of your choice.
Delicious Beach style sundal is ready to relish.
