Susiyam is one of the simple and easy recipes which can be prepared in 20 mins. Susiyam is nothing but a sweet ball, which is crispy on the outside and soft inside. This is usually prepared for Diwali or any special occasion.
Susiyam is very easy to prepare. Even a novice can prepare this without any hassle. There are two methods of making this sweet. We can use either all-purpose flour or urad dal flour to make the outer crust. Here we are going to see susiyam made with all-purpose flour. If you want it to be healthier, instead of deep-frying in the oil/ghee, you can make this in the appe pan with less oil/ghee.

Delicious and healthy chana dal susiyam.
|
- 1/2 cup Chana dal/kadalai paruppu
- 1/2 cup Jaggery/Vellam
- 1/4 cup Coconut grated
- 1 tsp Ghee
- 1 tsp Cardamom/Elaichi Powder
- 1/2 cup All purpose flour/Maida
- 2 tbsp Rice flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
- Wash and soak chana dal in water for 2 hours. In a pressure cooker, add soaked chana dal, a cup of water, and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.
- Once done, filter excess water from the chana dal. Chana dal water can be used later to make rasam. Now mash the chana dal with a masher.
- In a pan, add jaggery, 1/4 cup of water, and cook until the jaggery is melted completely and set aside.
- In a pan, add a tsp of ghee, coconut grated, and saute until the moisture of the coconut is gone. Add cooked dal and saute until all the water is absorbed.
- Now filter and add the jaggery water. Saute until the mixture turns thick. Add cardamom powder and mix well. Let it cool for a while. While it is still warm, make an equal size of 10-12 lemon size balls.
- In a bowl, add all-purpose flour, rice flour, salt and mix well. Add water little by little and make a thick batter.
- Heat enough oil in a kadai. Take a chana dal ball, dip it in the batter and drop it gently into the oil. Drop 4 to 5 balls at a time. Do not overcrowd.
- Cook until all the sides turn golden brown. Once done remove it on a kitchen towel and serve hot.
- Stuffing should be thick in consistency, or else you will not be able to make the shape.
- Instead of grated coconut, you can even add finely chopped bits of coconut.
- Use an equal amount of chana dal and jaggery.
- You can either deep fry susiyam in oil or ghee.
