Thakkali Kadayal is one of the simple and easy chutneys which is prepared with the available ingredients in the pantry. This is the typical road shop style chutney that I learned from my hometown roadside shop. This chutney turns out to be so tasty, that you will end up eating so many idli or dosa.
Simple things that should be considered while preparing this chutney is:
- Increase or decrease the spice according to your taste. Also, use only green chilies.
- Do not add garlic. This is served as ginger-flavored tomato chutney.
- Mash chutney with a masher. Do not grind it in the mixer.
- Use juicy red tomatoes (in Tamil we call it naattu thakkali).

Now let us see how to prepare this recipe.
- 1 Onion finely chopped
- 2 Tomatoes finely chopped
- 2 Green chilies finely chopped
- 1/2 inch Ginger grated
- salt to taste
- 1 tbsp Coriander Leaves/Kothamalli finely chopped
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds /kadugu
- 1 pinch Asafoetida/hing
- 1 strand Curry Leaves/Karuveppilai
- In a pressure cooker, add onion, tomato, green chili, ginger, 1/4 cup water, salt to taste, and mix all thoroughly.
- Pressure cook it for 3 whistles. Once done, open the lid.
- Filter the water and set it aside. Mash the gravy thoroughly. Do not grind it in the mixer. It should be mashed coarsely.
- Now add the reserved water, adjust salt if required, and mix all thoroughly.
- Temper the chutney with the seasoning mentioned under "to temper".
- Garnish with coriander leaves. Road shop style yummy tomato chutney is ready.
