Kollu rasam/horse gram rasam is a popular South Indian dish made up of horse gram and tamarind as the base ingredients. Kollu rasam is a comforting dish for colds and coughs. We can have this along with rice or can have it as soup.

- 1/2 cup Horse Gram/Kollu
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup Water
- 1/4 tsp Chili powder
- Tamarind small lemon size
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- 2 tsp Rasam powder (1.5 tsp Jeera + 1/2 tsp Pepper) crushed
- 6-7 pods garlic crushed
- 1 tbsp Coriander Leaves/Kothamalli finely chopped
- salt to taste
- 1 tsp Thalikkum Vadagam
- 1 strand Curry Leaves/Karuveppilai
- 1 tsp oil
- Soak tamarind in warm water for half an hour and extract the water.
- Add horse gram, salt, water, and pressure cook for four whistles in a pressure cooker.
- Remove water from the pressure-cooked horse gram and set it aside. This water is used to make the rasam. Cooked horse gram can be used to make thogayal or poriyal.
- In a saucepan, add horse gram water, turmeric powder, chili powder, crushed garlic, rasam powder, tamarind water, and salt to taste and boil it for 5 mins. switch off the flame.
- In a pan add oil. Once the oil gets heated, add thalikkum vadagam and curry leaves. Let it crackle. Add this tempering to the rasam.
- Garnish rasam with coriander leaves. Scrumptious horse gram rasam is ready.
- Use only the horse gram water to make the rasam.
- Cooked horse gram can be used in making thogayal, poriyal, or any other recipe.
- If you don't have thalikkum vadagam to temper, you can use mustard seeds and hing instead.
